[post_content] => New At Landscaping in Central Oregon? Try These Tips!

Central Oregon is a challenging place to exercise your green thumb.  Vohs Landscaping has the experience and the expertise to help your dreams grow.  Here's what you need to know, in order to start your landscaping renovation.

Unless you are a master landscaper, consider hiring a company to help you. It's great to be a do-it-yourselfer, but some think that they can save money by not using a company.  In fact, the opposite might actually be true. A professional can determine the exact chemicals, treatments, and care that your lawn needs, resulting in fewer mistakes, less work and usually a reduced cost.

Also, when purchasing landscaping materials, cheaper is seldom better. Yes, these materials will save you money.   But most of the time, the quality of these materials is not always top notch.  Ask neighbors, whose yards are working well which brands are the best.

Tip # 1: Always use odd numbers of plant groupings. It is more pleasing to the eye and more natural looking to see groups of 3, 5 or 7 plants than groups of 2, 4 or 6. Aim for plantings that are more triangle-shaped than square-shaped, and your landscaping will have more eye appeal.

Tip # 2: Create a plan. Before you pick up a shovel, map everything out on paper. Your plan can range in complexity from a quick sketch to a highly detailed proposal. Be sure to include the features in your garden that you want to keep, and then make several copies of the plan. Use these copies to design a number of different options for your garden, including various types of beds and hard scape.

Tip # 3: Properly layer your beds. You should have a first row with your tallest plants and keep your shortest plants for your last row. The tallest plants should be facing North to protect the smaller ones from cold winds. Make sure all your beds are organized in the same fashion.

Tip # 4: Limit Colors.  When planning out your landscape design, carefully consider the colors of the flowers, trees and grasses that you intend to use. You may discover that limiting your palette to only one or two colors has the greatest visual impact. Choosing too many contrasting colors may make your landscaping appear disheveled and wild.

Tip # 5:  Start with a Budget.  Determine your expected costs before you begin your landscaping project. Many plants are seasonally priced, and could change in cost a good deal in just a few weeks. Know the seasons for plants, and get firm costs on your project. This will also help you to save money, as you can orient your plans towards saving money on seasonal plants.

Tip # 6: Edging is your secret weapon.  Use an edger on your beds if you want your lawn to look well taken care of. An added bonus is that edging could raise the value of your residence as well; studies have shown that just by curving the edges on your flower beds, your property value could go up by one percent.

Tip # 7: Impatient?  Use Sod. Many people relish the idea of a lush green lawn, yet few are willing to wait for grass seeds to grow. Sod offers near-instant gratification, but tends to be a bit more costly. Save money and compromise by using sod for your front lawn and planting grass seeds in your backyard.

We know that you don't have all the time in the world to change up your property. The tips in this article have been written to minimize your effort, while maximizing the results. Use these tips, as soon as possible, to really make a difference around your house and in your enjoyment of your property.

[post_content] => Tips For A Greener Lawn from Agronomonist, Ryan Vohs

Is your lawn looking sad? Could your bushes and shrubs use a little makeover? If so, then your home may be in need of some landscaping. An updated landscaping plan can make your home look completely different and add a bit more attractiveness. Here are some landscaping tips that will spice up your yard.

If you are not a master landscaper, consider hiring a company to help you. Though do-it-yourself individuals often think that they can save money by not resorting to using a professional, the opposite might actually be true. A company can determine the exact chemicals, treatments, and care that your lawn needs, resulting in less work and sometimes, a reduced cost.

One of the most important tips one can use with regards to landscaping, is to come up with a plan before you start doing anything. It is important to carefully consider exactly what you want your yard to look like, and then make a detailed plan as to what steps you will need to take.

Quality products should be chosen; don't skimp. Big chains and home improvement stores may carry cheaper, lower quality products. Do your shopping at quality landscaping centers where the advice you receive will be from more experienced workers. Paying extra money will be worth it.  You'll get better products as well as great advice.

Allow your mower to leave behind some of the clipped grass while mowing your lawn. This will supply nutrients to your lawn as the grass decomposes, and you will not have to add fertilizer to your lawn as much as you would have otherwise.

When planning a landscaping project for your house, be sure that you are not losing quality when choosing products that cost less. While it is always a good idea to try to save money, you want to be sure that you are not missing out on quality products that will keep your landscaping job looking great for a long time.

If you're designing your landscape on your own, then try out mulch for your flowerbeds. Since mulch helps retain moisture, you should use it because you are landscaping a particularly hot and cold area of the country. Mulch will allow your plants to use as much water as possible.

Before you get out the shovel and wheelbarrow, make a careful plan for your landscaping project. You really need to think about your goals before you begin. What will you be using this outdoor space for when it is completed? Is it for sitting quietly and reading a book or for entertaining guests? Knowing your goals before starting will help you to achieve your desired outcome.

If you are trying to landscape on a budget, remember that you do not need to finish the entire project all at one time. Dividing your project into steps or seasons is a perfectly valid approach. You make it easier to get things down right and you budget your money wisely. Write down everything you want to accomplish, then prioritize each goal.

A great way to really enhance your landscape is to add a pond or waterfall to your design. This can really make your landscaping look beautiful and the sound of water flowing adds a sense of peacefulness and serenity to your entire landscape. This is a great way to make your landscape more tranquil.

Hopefully, now that you have these great landscaping tips, your home will look a little better. Your home will be seen by many people, whether it's friends and family, or random strangers, who happen to pass by. Why not make sure it looks good? These tips will give your home a new vibe and make it look sensational.

[post_content] => Pavers and concrete are two popular options for outdoor hardscaping projects, such as patios, walkways, and driveways. While they may seem similar at first glance, there are several key differences between the two materials that can impact your decision-making process.

Cost: Pavers tend to be more expensive than concrete, but the additional cost may be worth it for the added durability and versatility. Concrete is a more affordable option, especially for larger projects, but it may crack over time and require more maintenance.

Durability: Pavers are made from interlocking pieces that can withstand heavy foot traffic, inclement weather, and shifting soil without cracking. Concrete, on the other hand, is a solid surface that is more susceptible to cracks and other damage over time.

Appearance: Pavers come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colors, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your outdoor space. Concrete is also available in a variety of colors and patterns, but the options are more limited than with pavers.

Maintenance: Pavers require little maintenance, and any cracks or chips can be easily repaired by replacing individual pieces. Concrete may require resealing and other maintenance over time to keep it looking its best.

Installation: Installing pavers can be a time-consuming process, as each piece must be carefully placed and interlocked. Concrete, on the other hand, is poured in place, making it a faster and more straightforward option.

Climate: Pavers are a great option for areas with freeze-thaw cycles, as they can expand and contract without cracking. Concrete is more susceptible to damage from these cycles, especially if it is not installed properly.

In conclusion, both pavers and concrete have their pros and cons, and the best choice for your outdoor hardscaping project will depend on your specific needs, budget, and preferences. If you're looking for a durable, attractive, and low-maintenance option, pavers may be the better choice. However, if you're looking for a more affordable and faster option, concrete may be the way to go. Ultimately, it's important to consider your budget, climate, and personal preferences when making your decision, and to work with a professional landscaper who can help you make the best choice for your outdoor space.

One of the most popular options among homeowners is the sod lawn. Sod offers several benefits that make it an attractive choice for many people, but it’s important to understand that it may not be the right option in every circumstance.

Sod Lawns: An Overview

A sod lawn is a pre-grown lawn that is harvested and delivered in large pieces, which are then laid out in a soil bed. Unlike seed lawns, sod offers instant results and can be ready for normal lawn traffic in just a few weeks after installation. Sod is easy to establish and requires little maintenance, other than regular mowing.

Advantages of Sod
  1. Instant Results: Installing sod provides immediate gratification, giving your lawn an instantly finished look.
  2. Fast Establishment: With proper handling and installation, sod can take just two to three weeks to root well and become established.
  3. Immediate Erosion Control: Sod works as a blanket to help hold soil in place, making it an ideal choice for slopes or areas with erosion problems.
  4. Flexibility in Timing: Sod can be installed anytime during the growing season, except in extremely high heat, making it a flexible option for homeowners.
  5. Limited Weeds: High-quality, state-certified sod has few or no weeds, and it will outcompete weed seeds that try to move in early on.
  6. Quick Traffic Turnaround: Once the sod roots are established, it's ready for normal lawn traffic, including entertaining, play, and pets.
It's important to keep in mind that while sod offers several benefits, it may not be the best option for every homeowner. Before making a decision, it's important to consider factors such as your budget, the type of soil in your area, and the amount of maintenance you're willing to invest. Planting grass from seed can offer some advantages, especially for large scale plantings:
  1. Cost-effective: Seed is typically less expensive than sod, making it a cost-effective option for large areas.
  2. Customization: Planting from seed allows for customizing the type of grass to match specific climate and soil conditions.
  3. Environmentally friendly: Using seeds instead of sod reduces the amount of waste and resources needed for transportation and handling.
  4. Versatility: Seeds can be planted at any time during the growing season, providing more flexibility in timing.
In conclusion, while sod lawns offer several advantages, it's important to understand that they may not be the right choice in every circumstance. Consider factors such as your budget, soil type, and desired level of maintenance before making a decision. If you're unsure about the best type of lawn for your home, consider seeking the advice of a professional landscaping service like Vohs. A well-designed irrigation system will ensure the proper amount of water is delivered to your plants, reducing the risk of over or under watering, and ultimately saving you money. However, with so many options and variables to consider, it can be easy to make mistakes. Here are some tips to help you avoid common pitfalls and make the most of your irrigation system.
  1. Know your plants: Understanding the water requirements of the plants you have chosen is critical to the success of your irrigation system. Different plants have varying needs for water, light, and nutrients, and you need to make sure your irrigation system is designed to meet those needs. Consider the size, type, and location of each plant and how that will impact its water requirements.
  2. Start with a plan: Before you begin installing your irrigation system, take the time to create a detailed plan. This will help you identify the most efficient and cost-effective way to design and install your system. You should include the location of each plant, the type of irrigation system you will use, and the amount of water each plant will need.
  3. Consider the climate: The climate in your area will play a significant role in the design and installation of your irrigation system. In areas with hot, dry climates, it is essential to have an efficient irrigation system to keep your plants healthy. In areas with more rainfall, a more minimal system may be necessary.
  4. Use the right type of irrigation system: There are several types of irrigation systems to choose from, and you need to select the one that is best for your needs. Sprinkler systems are the most common, but there are also drip irrigation systems, subsurface irrigation systems, and more. Consider the type of plants you have and the amount of water they require when choosing your system.
  5. Consider water pressure and flow: Your irrigation system must have enough water pressure and flow to deliver water to all parts of your landscape. You should have your water pressure tested before you install your irrigation system to ensure it meets the requirements of your plants. If you have low water pressure, you may need to install a booster pump to increase the water flow.
  6. Use the right size piping and fittings: The size of the piping and fittings you use in your irrigation system will impact the amount of water that is delivered to your plants. You need to use the right size piping and fittings to ensure your system delivers water efficiently and effectively.
  7. Schedule your irrigation: Irrigation systems that run too long or too frequently can waste water and damage your plants. You should schedule your irrigation system to run at the right times and for the right duration to ensure your plants receive the right amount of water.
  8. Maintain your system: Regular maintenance of your irrigation system is essential to keep it running efficiently and effectively. You should inspect your system regularly for leaks, broken heads, clogged nozzles, and other issues that could impact its performance.
In conclusion, planning your irrigation system carefully is critical to the success of your landscape. By following these tips, you can avoid common mistakes and ensure your irrigation system delivers the right amount of water to your plants. If you are unsure about any aspect of your irrigation system, it is always best to consult with a professional to ensure you get the most from your investment. The times have sure changed, but my first part time job was on a grass seed farm at the age of 9. I continued to assist in farming though high school. I started golfing with an old hickory shaft putter at the age of 3. My journey of farming and golf developed my goal to pursue a degree in turf grass management. I went to the state championships for golf 3 years in a row and I understood the principles of grass seed production. I felt it just made sense to pursue an education that would apply the knowledge I already had. The program at OSU was recognized as being one of the top three in the country and was very difficult. There was always the understanding that  to succeed in our line of work this is what it takes: handwork, dedication, communication and personal sacrifice. I still enjoy a hard days' work and looking back and seeing just how much we accomplished that day. This "farmer work ethic" is something that you can't train: you either have it or you don't. -Ryan Vohs [post_date] => 2016-03-01 13:27:13 [post_excerpt] => [post_parent] => 0 [post_status] => publish [post_title] => Vohs Background: Grass Seed and Golf [post_type] => post [slug] => vohs-background-grass-seed-and-golf [__type:protected] => [_edit_lock] => 1555540933:2 [_edit_last] => Array ( [0] => 2 [1] => 2 ) [_thumbnail_id] => Array ( [0] => 116 [1] => 116 ) [slide_template] => Array ( [0] => default [1] => default ) [layout] => Array ( [0] => [1] => ) [embed] => Array ( [0] => [1] => ) [_wp_old_slug] => Array ( [0] => my-background-grass-seed-and-golf [1] => my-background-grass-seed-and-golf ) [_yoast_wpseo_primary_category] => Array ( [0] => [1] => ) [_yoast_wpseo_content_score] => Array ( [0] => 90 [1] => 90 ) [post_date_gmt] => 2016-03-01 21:27:13 [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => vohs-background-grass-seed-and-golf [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2019-04-17 15:44:34 [post_modified_gmt] => 2019-04-17 22:44:34 [post_content_filtered] => [guid] => /?p=167 [menu_order] => 0 [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [status] => publish ) ) [wp_head] => Timber\FunctionWrapper Object ( [_class:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => [_function:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => wp_head [_args:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => Array ( ) [_use_ob:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => ) [wp_footer] => Timber\FunctionWrapper Object ( [_class:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => [_function:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => wp_footer [_args:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => Array ( ) [_use_ob:Timber\FunctionWrapper:private] => ) [params] => Array ( [object] => Project [display] => archive [of] => project [items] => ProjectsPost [controller] => /home/743387.cloudwaysapps.com/fytptfmjyr/public_html/wp-content/themes/vohs21/controllers/archive-project.php [breadcrumbs] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [label] => Welcome [link] => / ) ) [title] => Projects [subhead] => Browse our Case Studies [headimg] => 445 [description] => Behind The Scenes ) [heading] => [sub_heading] => [image] => [market_sectors] => WP_Error Object ( [errors] => Array ( [invalid_taxonomy] => Array ( [0] => Invalid taxonomy. ) ) [error_data] => Array ( ) [additional_data:protected] => Array ( ) ) [services] => Array ( [0] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 70 [name] => Excavation / Backhoe [slug] => excavation-backhoe [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 70 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [1] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 56 [name] => Fencing Design and Installation [slug] => fencing-design-and-installation [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 56 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [2] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 59 [name] => Landscape Design and Construction [slug] => landscape-design-and-construction [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 59 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [3] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 69 [name] => Maintenance Planning [slug] => maintenance-planning [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 69 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [4] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 71 [name] => Snowplowing [slug] => snowplowing [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 71 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [5] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 79 [name] => Spring Cleanup [slug] => spring-cleanup [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 79 [taxonomy] => service [description] => [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [6] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 68 [name] => Winterization [slug] => winterization [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 68 [taxonomy] => service [description] => Including sprinkler blow-outs [parent] => 0 [count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [7] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 72 [name] => Xeriscaping Design and Construction [slug] => xeriscaping-design-and-construction [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 72 [taxonomy] => service [description] => sometimes called Zeroscaping, Xeriscaping Design and Construction is [parent] => 0 [count] => 1 [filter] => raw ) ) [page_links] => [sidebar] => [templates] => Array ( [0] => archive-.twig.html [1] => default/index.twig.html ) )
